Remote Terminal Manager

Remote Terminal Manager (RTM) is the de facto industry standard for remote management of Inmarsat terminals, It is of particular interest for companies with terminals deployed in areas where there is no skilled staff available to take care of the terminals. RTM is predominantly used for Media and for Machine to Machine implementations:

Media companies use RTM to monitor quality of service, to assure that there is sufficient signal strength to achieve high bit rates, and to make sure that their reporters don't leave an expensive streaming session running for too long. They also use it to simply trace where their terminals are, and to do general trouble shooting.

In M2M projects, satellite terminals are deployed to remote areas where there is typically nobody available to look after the terminals. M2M projects use RTM to do things like: Monitoring signal strength degradation, rebooting a terminal, upgrading firmware, remotely starting or stopping a data session and reconfiguring terminal settings. RTM also autonomously monitors their data connections.

M2M installations that are equipped with Skywave IsatData Pro (IDP) terminals can even use RTM to monitor measured values of connected sensors, turning RTM into a SCADA monitoring and alerting solution.

Technology

Remote Terminal Manager interacts with a BGAN terminal via a direct link to Inmarsat. Control messages sent to/from the terminal are transmitted via a different beam on the Inmarsat Satellite than the spot beams used for data sessions. This enables RTM to control the terminal even under hard conditions when the terminal is no longer able to establish a normal data connection.

RTM gets frequent updates from the Inmarsat network with status information about a terminals data sessions. This enables RTM to monitor the terminal's activity in near real time.
